Biological purificn., by bio:filtration where effluent is placed in contact with purifying microorganisms with or without oxygenation. The effluent passes through discrete zones, each designed to trap different constituents and to subject the effluent to biodegradation with or without oxygenation, by microorganisms adapted to each zone. Reactor has four zones (A,B,C,D), each having means of trapping constituents of effluent and forming base for biotransformation. Reactor has effluent entry (2) and treated effluent outlet (3), gas evacuation port (6), microorganism recovery (9) and oxygenation system (8). Constituents of effluent are trapped on supports (4a,4b) comprising coated vertical panels, which act as supports for microorganisms, placed parallel to one another to form a chicane. USE/ADVANTAGE - Domestic, industrial and agriculture effluent treatment. Suitable for treatment of effluent with high pollutant levels. 90% redn. in COD can be obtd.. Flexible operation in which relative size of each zone is determn. by type of effluent. Aerobic or anaerobic operation.
