PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To handle the whole data base, which is divided and stored on plural storage devices, as a single entity by dividing a bit stream into plural data segments and storing them. SOLUTION: When a data base inquiry is received, a range value 117 is matched against a range index 115 so as to obtain a standard corresponding to at least one of segment indexes 218-224. Further, the corresponding segment indexes 218-224 as standards are accessed respectively and matched against the inquiry value. Consequently, when the inquiry value matches the segment indexes 218-224, a single or plural corresponding addresses and records are retrieved from data segments 318-324 to gain access to the data segments 318-324.
