PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the decline of the quality of images by performing control so as not to exceed the gradation value of an actual picture element closest to the gradation value of an object picture element. SOLUTION: The gradation values Vl, V and Vh are in the relation of Vl< V<Vh and a picture element Pt is an interpolation object picture element. A high level picture element Pvh present at a position closest to the picture element Pt is retrieved by performing retrieval in a vertical direction with the picture element Pt as a center, the high level picture element Phh present at the closest position is retrieved by performing the retrieval in a horizontal direction, the picture elements Pvh and Phh are compared and a distance for the high level picture element closer to the picture element Pt is defined as a high level distance Dhigh. The retrieval is performed similarly for a low level picture element as well and a low level distance Dlow is obtained. After obtaining the high level distance Dhigh and the low level distance Dlow in such a manner, the picture element value L to be corrected of the interpolation object picture element is obtained. A formula is L=(Lhigh-Llow)×Dlow/Dlow+ Dhigh+Llow, and in this case, Lhigh=Vh and Llow=Vl. |
