In a liquid crystal display which uses liquid crystal exhibiting a smectic phase, a burning phenomenon caused by an internal electric field due to its layered structure and spontaneous polarization is to be reduced, thus realizing satisfactory display. Therefore, the liquid crystal display has a display data converting circuit, and forcibly generates a predetermined display state of an arbitrary pixel for a predetermined period regardless of display data to be written in a pixel so as to correct changes of the layered structure and prevent long-term existence of the internal electric field due to the spontaneous polarization in the same direction.
