PURPOSE: An apparatus for playing an optical disk is provided to table address values of error data having defects and corresponding seek speeds on the optical disk, and to convert the seek speeds by referring to an error table when the error data are detected in the next seek process. Therefore, the entire play speed is improved. CONSTITUTION: A pickup(11) seeks an optical disk(10) and reads a signal. A memory(15) makes seek speeds of error data having defects correspond to address values of the error data, under the control of a controller(13), and records the seek speeds in an error table. If the error data are detected in a signal seek process of the optical disk(10), the controller(13) decides whether the address values of the error data are recorded in the error table. If so, the controller(13) converts the seek speeds into seek speeds of the address values, and performs a seek process.
