PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability at the time of adjusting image quality and colors of color characters, etc., about an original including one among a chromatic or achromatic character image, a photographic image and a halftone dot image. SOLUTION: The original reader determines a character area, a photographic area and a halftone dot area of an original on the basis of a first parameter and also determines whether one or more among the character area, photographic area and halftone dot area of the original are chromatic or achromatic on the basis of a second parameter. The original reader is provided with an image processing means 36 for processing an image in accordance with the resultant determinations, an operation setting means 14 for setting the first and second parameters, and a control means 15 for displaying on the same screen first parameter adjustment contents for determining one area or more among the character area, photographic area and halftone dot area of the document, and second parameter adjustment contents for determining whether one or more among the character area, photographic area and halftone dot area of the original are chromatic or achromatic.
