摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spark ignition type internal combustion engine capable of achieving high thermal efficiency even in a region where control of an intake air amount by varying of valve closing timing of an intake valve is difficult. SOLUTION: The spark ignition type internal combustion engine is provided with a variable compression ratio mechanism A capable of varying a mechanical compression ratio, a variable valve timing mechanism B capable of controlling the valve closing timing of the intake valve, and an air flow control valve 19 controlling the air flow in a cylinder and capable of controlling the intake air amount supplied into a combustion chamber. The mechanical compression ratio is made to be maximum so as to obtain a maximum expansion ratio in the engine low load operation, and an actual compression ratio in the engine low load operation is almost same with an actual compression ratio in the engine medium high load operation.
