A foundry sand binder comprises a mixture of particles of iron oxide and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of starch and alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and ammonium ligno sulphates. The starch is preferably gelatinized. The binder may also include one or more of ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides, such as ammonium-, potassium-, sodium-, calcium- and magnesium chloride. A mix for a CO 2 hardened mould also contains a solution of sodum silicate. Many examples are quoted, one including a small quantity of kaolin.</p> |
