A polymer containing a repeating unit -CH2-CHR-X-, where R=H or alkyl and X=O or S and 0.5-10 mole per cent of unsaturated groups is vulcanized by heating it with S or a S-releasing compound and a compound of formula R12NCSSNR1R111, where R1 and R11 are alkyl and R111 is H or alkyl or R12 and R11 and R111 are cyclic systems. Specified accelerators are Et2NCSSNHC6H11 and Et2NCSSNBui2. 0.5-5% may be used. ZnO, stearic acid, antioxidants and antiozonants may also be present. The reaction temperature is 105-350 DEG F. Polymers specified are derived from ethylene, propylene and butylene oxides and sulphides with butadiene monoxide, isoprene monoxide, limonine monoxide, allyl glycidyl ether, H-crotyl glycidyl ether, their sulphur analogues or allyloxy-methyl thiirane. R1, R11 and R111 may be Me, Et, Pr, Bun, Bui or cyclohexyl. In Examples (1 and 2) the reaction mixtures were a propylene oxide/allyl glycidyl ether copolymer, sulphur, stearic acid, ZnO, carbon black, an antioxidant mixture of phenyl-b -naphthylamine, 3-methyl, dimethoxy diphenylamine and diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine and Et2NCSSNHC6H11 (1A, 2A, B, C and D) or Et2NCSSNBui2 (1B). In addition an aromatic oil was added in (2B, C and D). In Example (3) the reaction mixture comprised an ethylene sulphide/propylene sulphide/allyloxy-methylthiirane polymer, carbon black, phenyl-b -naphthylamine, ZnO, stearic acid, sulphur, diallylphthalate and Et2NCSSNH. |
