A voltage tunable magnetron includes an interdigitating arrangement of anode segments disposed in a cylindrical array, around which extend at least three terminal rings, the outermost rings being coupled to the opposite ends of some of the segments, and to the opposite ends of the axial opening of an enclosing toroidal cavity resonator, and the remaining segments being connected to the central ring, which is itself connected to the resonator by at least one conductive rod. Electrons emitted from the thermionic cathode 18 pass into the annular interaction space 15, in which an axial magnetic field is maintained, and which is formed by the segments 16 of a cylindrical interdigital structure. Fig. 2, and an electrode 17 which is at the potential of the cathode; the segments 16 are positive with respect to the electrode 19, which is itself positive with respect to the cathode. Alternate segments 16 are connected at each end to terminal discs 35 and 36, which are at R.F. earth potential, and project beyond ceramic wall portions 37, 38, 39 to connect with circumferential portions 40, 41 of a copper resonant cavity 12. The remaining segments 16 are connected at their centre points to terminal disc 34, which is connected to the central portion of the wall of the resonator by one or more solid copper or conductively coated rods 42, the impedance of which maintains disc 34 effectively R.F. isolated. The Q and the resonant frequency of the resonator are adjustable by change in the number or crosssectional area of the rods 42, and the R.F. output is obtained from a coaxial connection 44 connected to disc 34 by a conductive rod 43. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the ceramic wall portions 38, 39 are dispensed with, and the resonator is sealed to, or is integral with, the discs 35 and 36, and constitutes the envelope of the magnetron. |
