[Also in Group IV(a)] Coating compositions comprise (i) an epoxy resin, (ii) a coal tar pitch having a ring-and-ball softening point of at least 60‹C., and/or bitumen having an R. & B. softening point of at least 45‹C., (iii) a hardener for (i), (iv) a chlorinated hydrocarbon and/or a ketone, and, if desired, (v) another solvent. Specified compounds are- (i) a long list of epoxy hydrocarbons and esters, glycidyl amines, esters and ethers of alcohols, phenols and novolacs, and epoxy resins which have been partially esterified with drying oil fatty, sebacic, phthalic, or citric acids ; the polyglycidyl ether or bisphenol A is used in the examples. (ii) coal tar pitch and distillation, blown, extract, and cracking bitumens. (iii) a long list of amines and amides, urea-, aniline-, melamine-, and phenol-formaldehyde resins, polyamides, polyaminostyrenes, isocyanates, isothiocyanates, polyhydric phenols, quinone, Al aceto acetic ester, Friedel Crafts catalysts, phosphoric acids, and dicarboxylic acid anhydrides ; urea-formaldehyde resins, diethylene triamine and ethylene diamine are used in the examples. (iv) dichlorobenzenes, trichlorethylene, and perchlorethylene; methyl ethyl and methyl isobutyl ketones, cyclo hexanone, and diacetone alcohol. (v) toluene, xylene, and anthracene heavy oil.
