A conduit 16, Fig. 1, for transmitting a laser beam from a generator (12, Fig. 4, not shown) to a surgical instrument (14) comprises a flexible tube 26, coated on its inner surface with a continuous reflective film, 24, e.g. of gold. A flexible coating layer (28, Fig. 2, not shown) may cover tube 26. The conduit is made Fig. 3 (not shown) by depositing the film (24) on a mandrel (72), coating the film with the flexible layer (26) and then withdrawing the mandrel, which may be covered with a parting agent (74) before deposition of the film. In another embodiment Fig. 8 (not shown) the conduit is made by helically winding a metallic ribbon (62, Fig. 7, not shown), comprising a reflective layer (64) on a base layer (66), and coating the wound ribbon with a flexible layer (68). The surgical instrument (14, Fig. 5, not shown) comprises a cylindrical body (34), tapered at its distal end (36), the inner tapered wall (40) in the body (34) having a reflective coating, and the laser beam being concentrated on a lens (46) which focuses the beam beyond the end opening (32). In another embodiment Fig. 6 (not shown), the lens is omitted and the inner wall of the instrument has a continuous taper and is coated with reflective material. An antiseptic cover (58) is provided for the instrument, which has a switch (54) to operate the laser.</p> |
