In a winding apparatus for concurrently winding strands of yarn into packages of substantially identical predetermined size, each winding station has an active winding unit and a reserve winding unit, each reserve winding unit being inactive during substantially all of the winding cycle of its associated active unit, there being signal means operable to bring each reserve unit up to winding speed prior to the package on the associated active unit attaining its predetermined size, said signal means also providing a signal to indicate that manual transfer of the strand by the transfer means is to be effected, and control means for operating the signal means. In the particular embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) when a counter (46) has run through a pre-determined interval of time it closes a circuit to a timer motor (1M) that operates a call signal such as a red light (36) and a horn (35), At the same time a reset device (51) operates to cause the counter (46) to begin counting another winding period. When the light (36) and the horn (35) operate, the winding attendant knows that the plurality of winding stations allocated to said light and horn are about to complete their packages. The winding attendant depresses a button (37) to silence the horn (35). In due course a first station timer motor (2M) is actuated and a master timer actuates a yellow light signal (38) as well as a signal to a winding head controller (39) to bring the reserve winding head at said first station up to speed. The yellow light is an instruction that the attendant must transfer the yarn from the first package to the feed means associated with the reserve winding head. After a predetermined time a white light is illuminated at the first station and when this occurs the attendant operates a transfer lever to transfer the yarn to the reserve head. This sequence is repeated, in turn, for each of the other winding stations. |
