A process for producing FeMn or FeCr having a maximum of 1.5% Si from a high silicon FeMn or FeCr (e.g. 15 - 35% Si for FeMn or 30 - 60% Si for FeCr) comprises feeding the high silicon starting material, a manganese or chromium ore or a slag containing MnO or Cr2O3, a basic slag former (e.g. quicklime, MgO or calcined dolomite) and optionally a flux (e.g. CaF2) into a melting pot, the high silicon FeMn or FeCr feed having a maximum grain size of 5 mm, the liquid slag being removed from the molten alloy to leave the low Si final alloy. |
