A filling head for a counterpressure bottle filling machine comprises a body 10 and a bottle locating member 12 having a bore 11 therein, a valve 13, 14 controlled by an electromagnet 17, a pressurizing and return gas pipe 18 provided with a laterally extending passage 26, and an extension 27, and a casing 19 surrounding the pipe 18 and a greater part of the extension 27, the casing being insulated from the pipe 18 and the extension 27 except for the free end of the extension by a layer of material 28, e.g. of plastics. The casing is also conductively connected to the electromagnet 17 which is connected to one pole of a source of current through conductor a, the pipe 18 and extension 27 being connected to the other pole through conductor b. When a bottle is located in the member 12, the bottle is pressurized to the pressure of the filling liquid via valve 24, passage 22, leading from the liquid container, and tubes 18, 26. The valve 13, 14 then opens against the action of spring 16 to allow liquid to flow into the bottle, and the gas leaves the bottle via tubes 26, 18, 23 and throttle 25 to atmosphere. When the liquid level reaches the bottom of casing 19, electrical contact is made between casing 19 and the free end of the extension 27 thus completing the circuit to actuate electromagnet 17 to close the valve 13, 14. The bottle is then removed. Before its withdrawal, the filled bottle may be provided with an inert gas from a source (30) through duct (31) and valve (32) leading into the passage 11, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the electromagnet 17 is arranged on the housing 10 outside passage 11, the liquid valve 13 being a flat slide valve. In this case, instead of a spring lacking on the valve, a switching pulse is used.</p> |
