In a seal for a rotary pump shaft 2 comprising a rotary ring 18 urged into facial sealing contact with a non-rotary seating, the seating comprises a sintered carbon ring 5 located in a recess 4 in the shaft housing 1 and having a bearing face pressed by a spring 7 against an end face 9 of the recess, the sealing face 19 and the bearing face of the ring 5 being ground plane parallel. The spring 7 is located by a circlip 8 and a sealing ring 6 is fitted in a recess in the carbon ring 5. The metal ring 18 is sealed to the shaft 2 by a sealing ring 17 and urged into contact with ring 5 by a spring 14 compressed between fingers 15 of a pressure ring 16 and a ring 12 secured to the shaft. The ring 5 may be impregnated with metal on its face remote from its sealing face 19.</p> |
