Toughening of glass sheets suspended vertically is effected by means of blowing boxes which act on the two faces of the glass sheet and which, after the introduction of the latter, are brought into the working position by pivoting around axes situated outside the boxes; when in this position the boxes are brought into contact with guides, fixed in the space, which secure the mutual spacing of the boxes during blowing. - Locking components are fixed to the frames which carry the boxes and includes braking surfaces and cavities which can engage with bolts fixed in the space and operated by fluid under pressure; the closing of the blowing boxes will therefore be braked progressively in its last phase and the frame will automatically be locked at the moment when they reach their final position. In this final position they are given an oscillating movement by a mechanism described in the French patent 1,240,091. - So that the glass sheet does not touch the boxes during blowing, stops made from an elastic, heat-resisting material are provided on the surfaces of the blowing boxes which carry the blowing nozzles. These, in combination with the locking device, ensure safe and delicate handling of the glass sheets.
