Novel N-cyanoalkyl haloacetamides of the formula X-CH2-CO-NH-CHR-CH2-CN where X represents chlorine or bromine and R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting the appropriate haloacetyl halides with cyanoalkylamines. The compounds have fungicidal properties (see Division A5). N-Cyanomethyl monobromoacetamide is prepared by reacting cyanomethylamine with bromoacetyl chloride.ALSO:A fungicidal composition comprises a N-cyanoalkyl haloacetamide of the formula X-CH2-CO-NH-Y-CN wherein X is chlorine or bromine and Y is a branched or unbranched alkylene radical of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, together with a suitable carrier. The composition may be in the form of a wettable powder, a dust or an emulsifiable concentrate.
