An electric cell comprises an anode of metal capable of reducing SO 2 and a cathode of a material inert to SO 2 both immersed in liquid SO 2 containing an inert salt and a depolarizer. The anode may be Li or Na. The cathode may be either (a) finely divided nickel sintered to a nickel screen, (b) a mixture of depolarizer and, finely divided nickel pressed on to a nickel screen or (c) depolarizer packed into a hole drilled in a porous carbon block and a graphite rod pushed into it. The salt may be LiBr or LiClO 4 . The depolarizer should be soluble either in the oxidized or reduced form. Depolarizers specified are: N,N,N1,N<SP>1</SP> - tetra - methyl benzidine, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - tetra - methyl - di - imonium diphenoquinone, 1,2 - bis - julolidium ethylene diperchlorate, the tetra - cation of N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>- tetrakis - (p - diethyl - aminophenyl) - p - phenylene diamine, 1,10 - phenanthroline ferrous perchlorate, bis(ditrifluoromethyl ethylene dithiolato) nickel, tris(ditrifluoromethyl ethylene dithiolato) cobalt, (bis ditrifluoromethyl ethylene dithiolato) cobalt, tetracyano ethylene and sulphuryl chloride. An organic solvent may also be present. The cell may be rechargeable. |
