A platinum group metal on activated alumina catalyst (which has been prepared by hydrolysing AlCl3, drying and calcining before impregnating with a platinum group metal halogen compound) is washed with aqueous primary, secondary and/or tertiary amine of formula RR1R11N, in which R, R1 and R11 may be the same or different, are each hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1-4 C and are not all hydrogen, whereby the halogen content of the catalyst upon subsequent drying and calcining is reduced to below 0,05% by weight. Examples are given in which 8-14 mesh Al2O3 particles are used and the catalysts may additionally contain SiO2 and MnO2. Specifications 735,390 and 837,590, and U.S.A.
