An air cushion vehicle 1 for operation over a fixed track 5, in the embodiment of inverted T- section, is formed with supporting-cushion spaces 4a, 4b and guiding-cushion spaces 7a, 7b. The supporting cushions are enclosed by flexible skirts 6 at the outer edge of the track and by inner flexible skirts 13a, 13b which are common to the supporting and guiding cushions. Other flexible skirts 11 co-operate with the top edge 5a of the track guide flange. Air is delivered under pressure to the guiding cushions from pumps 8 and ducts 10 and the gap between the respective faces of the guiding rail and the skirts 13a, 13b is such that with sufficient pressure maintained in the guiding cushions air will flow past skirts 13a, 13b into supporting cushion spaces 4a, 4b to maintain the supporting cushions. It is stated that this arrangement provides automatic self-balancing of lateral forces 15 and tilting moments 24. Apparatus is described (Fig. 6, not shown) for maintaining the daylight clearance at the supporting cushions substantially constant. In a further embodiment (Figs. 7-10, not shown) adjustable blow-rate control devices may be provided in place of the simple flexible walls 11 shown in Fig. 1. |
