1298613 Ketones; alcohols CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 29 April 1970 [30 April 1969] 20587/70 Heading C2C In a process for the oxidation of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon by means of oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen to provide a ketone and alcohol, the oxidation product being washed at elevated temperature with an alkaline solution to neutralize carboxylic acids present in the oxidation product whereby a wash-liquor is obtained at a temperature above 40‹ C., a method of recovering ketone, alcohol and unreacted hydrocarbon from said wash liquor comprises cooling the wash liquor to a temperature of not more than 40‹ C. and recovering the resulting organic phase comprising unreacted hydrocarbon and the ketone and alcohol. In a modification of the process the oxidation is carried out in the presence of a boron compound and the oxidation product is subjected to a preliminary wash water to hydrolyse the boron compound and remove the resulting boric acid before being washed at elevated temperature to neutralize carboxylic acids present. The oxidation of cyclododecane to give cyclododecanol, cyclododecanediol, cyclodecanone, cyclododecanone-ol and small amounts of intermediate products is described.
