Novel compounds of the Formula I wherein the -OCH 2 CHOHCH 2 NR 3 R 4 group is in the 5- or 8- position of the coumarin ring and R 1 , R 2 and R 3 may be the same or different and each represents hydrogen as a C 1 to C 6 alkyl group and R 4 is a C 1 to C 6 alkyl group may be prepared by reacting a compound of Formula III wherein Y is 2-oxiranyl or a 1-hydroxy-2-haloethyl group and the group -OCH 2 Y is in the 5- or 8- positions on the coumarin ring with an amine R 3 R 4 NH. The Compound III in which Y is 1-hydroxy- 2-haloethyl may be prepared by hydrolysis with HX, where X is the halogen in III, of a compound III in which Y is 2-oxiranyl, which in turn is produced by reacting a 5- or 8- hydroxyl coumarin with an epihalohydrin. Pharmaceutical compositions of the compounds I shows cardiovascular activity when administered orally or parenterally with a diluent or carrier. |
