Polyolefins, partic. polypropylene, are heat-stabilised or plasticised with dicarboxylic acid esters of formula: X(CH2CH2COOR)2 (I) (where X is -O- or -S- and R is 8-20C alkyl or alkenyl). - (I) are prepared by reacting a dinitrile X(CH2CH2CN)2 with the corresponding alcohol in an inert anhydrous solvent, at temps. below + 50 degrees C (pref. below 25 degrees C, with HCl in at least equiv. amounts, pref. 3.5-5.5 molar excess, and decomposing the reaction product, after completion of reaction, with boiling water or steam. - Pref. (1) solvent and alcohol are saturated with required amt. HCl, and the other components are subsequently added, or (2) solvent, alcohol and dinitrile are mixed and required amt. HCl charged to mixture.
