A large number of small, individual vessels are mounted on a carrier plate, above which is a dropper, and there is a drive for the relative and independent movement of both. This drive produces a first movement of one or the other whilst the other is stationary so that each vessel in turn passes sequentially under the dropper so that it receives one or more drops of the sample liquid. A second movement places a second row of containers so that they are in turn traversed by the dropper. The two movements are controlled by a programme unit so that all containers are filled progressively with the necessary start, stop and reversing steps. Two independent drives may be used for the two directions of motion.
