1,196,057. Steam traps. WATTS REGULATOR CO. 6 June, 1968 [14 June, 1967], No. 26951/68. Heading F4U. When liquid is present in a steam trap 12, a small gap 40 between a piston 36 and the wall of the trap is sealed by the liquid so that a sufficient pressure drop in the upper part 14 of the trap causes the piston to rise thereby lifting a valve member 46 to open a liquid drain outlet 56. When no liquid has entered the trap, gaseous communication through the gap 40 is sufficient to prevent raising of the piston. Wet gas enters the trap through an inlet 20 and liquid is separated centrifugally by means of fins 24. Gas leaves the trap through a filter 22 and an outlet 21. When the gas line downstream of the outlet 21 is closed, subsequent re-opening will cause a pressure drop in the part 14 of the trap, which drop will open the drain valve if liquid is present. Manual drainage of the trap may be achieved by screwing in a pipe 54 until passages 60 communicate with the interior of the trap. |
