Woven fabric suitable for use as a backing in tufted pile fabrics comprises closely spaced polyolefin warp yarns and polyolefin weft yarns the angle between the warp and weft yarns being from 3 to 10 degrees from a right angle. The yarns may be of polyethylene, polypropylene or copolymers of ethylene or propylene and may be flat, round, foamed, or flat and folded. The bias angle between the warp and weft may be effected on a tenter frame in which parallel gripping mechanisms on the two edges are run at slightly different speeds or one mechanism may be disposed at a slight angle to the other. Heat setting may be carried out simultaneously with the tentering. For polypropylene yarn the setting temperature may be between 132 to 154.5 degrees centigrade and a preferred cycle of treatment is 30 seconds at 143.5 degrees centigrade. |
