A cathode-ray tube is protected against implosion by a composite covering over the cone portion comprising a layer 31 of glass fibre cloth bonded by a coating 30 of synthetic resinous material, a two-part or single part discontinuous metal rim band 23 bonded by a similar coating 32, a second metal band 21 which encircles the tube at its maximum diameter, is maintained in tension and is bonded by a synthetic resin coating 33, and a layer 41 of glass fibre yarn and resinous bonding material. This construction may be modified as follows and as indicated in the corresponding Figures (not shown):-(1) The bonding layer 33 is omitted, Fig. 17. (2) The layers 30, 31 are omitted, Fig. 18. (3) The layer 41 is omitted, Fig. 10. (4) The layers 33, 41 are omitted, Fig. 9. (5) The layers 30, 31, 41 are omitted, Fig. 7. (6) The layers 33, 41 are omitted and the band 21 does not overlie the layer 31, Fig. 12. (7) The layers 21, 33, 41 are replaced by a layer of yarn and resinous bonding material, Fig. 13. (8) The layers 30, 31, 33 are omitted, Fig. 15. (9) The layers 30, 31, 33, 41 are omitted, Fig. 6. (10) All the layers are replaced by one two-part or single-part discontinuous metal band (tensioned or untensioned) with an adhesive layer, the covering encompassing (a) only the region of tube maximum diameter, Fig. 2, or (b) this region and the rim of the viewing screen, Fig. 3, or (c) this region, the rim and tube seal line, Fig. 4. (11) As in modification 12(c) but with a second metal band placed in tension about the region of maximum diameter, Fig. 16. The bonding material may be epoxy or polyester resin or silicon-containing or lead-borate solder glasses. The glass fibre yarn may be tensioned or untensioned. The method of processing the tube mentioned in modification (4) above, Figs. 8, 9 and 11 (not shown) is described.
