Improved carbon black for type treads is produced from pyrolysed hydrocarbon starting material, wherein (a) a fuel is burnt with air to form hot combustion gases and ratio air/fuel is 0.017 (b) the fuel, hydrocarbon starting material and air are mixed in molar ratio of carbon/oxygen >2.05 and (c) components of the gaseous vortex from outlet of the converging section of a furnace reaction chamber are withdrawn at a linear velocity of 120-760 m/sec. and resultant aerosol is colled to =870 degrees C within 0.013 secs. after vortex has left converging section.
