1,154,538. Esterification of terephthalic acid. MOBIL OIL CORP. 19 Feb., 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 7922/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] A continuous esterification process comprises introducing a highly viscous reaction mixture comprising a uniform dispersion of solid terephthalic acid particles in a glycol containing 2-10 carbon atoms into a narrow esterification zone at a flow rate which is substantially uniform across the entire cross-sectional area of the narrow inlet of the zone, at a temperature substantially below the esterification threshold temperature of the components and below the point of substantial vaporization of the glycol, transporting the reaction mixture through the length of the esterification zone while heating all portions of the mixture to esterification temperature substantially uniformly and rapidly during passage through the zone while providing a mechanical wiping section adjacent to a heated wall of the zone. A catalyst may be present. The preferred glycol is ethylene glycol of which 1-2 mols are preferably used per mol of acid. |
