Bisphenol phosphite derivatives of formula <FORM:1018799/C3/1> where Ar is an aromatic nucleus Z is halogen, or the group -OY derived from a phenol HOY which is phenol or an alkyl- or alkenyl-substituted phenol, and R and R1 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkaryl, cycloalkyl, haloalkyl or alkenyl, or are each a ring member of one cycloalkyl group, are used as heat stabilizers and flame retardants in resin compositions. In examples compounds of the above formula are incorporated in: (2) and (7) polyvinylchloride along with di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and barium cadmium laurate; (8) a foaming composition comprising a 1,4,5,6,7,7-hexachlorobicyclo (2.2.1)-5-heptene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride polyester, toluene diisocyanate, 1,4-diazobicyclo - (2.2.2) - octane and CFCl3; (9) a foaming composition comprising a trimethylolpropane/adipic acid condensate, toluene diisocyanate, dibutyl tin laurate and CFCl3; (10) methyl methacrylate or a partially polymerized methyl methacrylate which is then polymerized with benzoyl peroxide and (11) styrene syrup which is then polymerized with benzoyl peroxide.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1018799/C2/1> where Ar is an aromatic nucleus, Z is halogen or the group -OY derived from a phenol HO-Y which is phenol or an alkyl- or alkenyl-substituted phenol, and R and R1 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkaryl, cycloalkyl, haloalkyl or alkenyl or are each a ring member of one cycloalkyl group. They are prepared by reacting a compound <FORM:1018799/C2/2> with a phosphorus trihalide to give <FORM:1018799/C2/3> where X is halogen, and, if desired, reacting this with HO-Y. The products are used as heat stabilizers and flame retardants for resins. |
