Cooling of ready-rolled steel wire takes place between rolling temp. above austenitic transformation temp. and that of max. pearlite transformation rate between outlet from finishing stand of rolls and reel by means of the fused mass of a material which is stable in its liquid phase at the pressures used and has approx. the temp. of the max. pearlite transformation rate, where fused mass acts on steel wire in a way such that gamma-alpha-transformation of wire material takes place before reeling. Cooling is pref. carried out with a fused salt of 320-400 degrees C m.pt, pref. heated to 450-600 degrees C cooling temp., and pref. consisting mainly of alkali hydroxide pref. with added carbonates, the decompn temp. of which is > the cooling temp.
