The apparatus controls data input and output path to multipurpose I/O units such as magnetic tape unit or hard disk unit. The circuit comprises a FIFO input selection circuit (11) for selecting data input according to the input selection signal transmitted from an I/O controller (10), a FIFO memory (7) for storing data selected by the FIFO input selection circuit (11), a FIFO output selection circuit (12) for selecting output data of the FIFO memory (7), an I/O bus input selection circuit (13) for selecting bus between I/O bus A or I/O bus B to send data of I/O units (A,B), an I/O bus output selection circuit (14) for generating and transmitting output selection signals (SEL1-SEL2) to the FIFO output selection circuit, and I/O A,B units (4,4') for transmitting and receiving I/O data from multipurpose I/O units.
