[Also in Division B3] A rivet comprises a tube 10 having a flange 12 and threads 17, the threads engaging a shank 13 provided with threads 15 and a drill tip 19. The threads 15, 17 are left handed and the space between the shank and the tube is filled with a plastics material 18 such as a thermosetting plastics. Projections 14 enable the shank to be gripped in the chuck of an electric drill in order to drill a hole through the members 30, 31. When the lower surface of the flange 12 abuts the member 31 a fluted portion 11 of the tube wedges the rivet in the hole and the left hand threads unscrew the shank 13. In so doing, the drill tip deforms the tube 10 against the member 30 before breaking off at a weakened portion 16. The tube 10 is made of metal and the plastics material forms a seal to prevent leakage through the rivet. The weakened portion may be omitted and the rivet fastened until the threads 17 have been stripped, the shank then being driven through the rivet and discarded. The entire interior and exterior surfaces of the rivet may be coated with a thermosetting plastics material. In a modification, the fluted portion is omitted and locking tabs which bite into the member 31 are formed on the flange. |
