In a planetary reduction gear 10 mounted within, or adjacent to (Fig. 2 not shown), a vehicle wheel 11 and connected to drive the wheel 11, a two-stage compound planetary gear, of which the sun gears are mounted to have a semi-floating and self-aligning movement to ensure equal tooth load and improve gear tooth wear comprises a first sun gear 20, mounted on a flexible drive shaft 12 extending through the wheel, meshing planets 21 of a carrier 22 splined at 30 to a second sun 31 floatably mounted between and meshing planets 40 of a reaction carrier 32 splined via a sleeve 34 to a fixed wheel support 36, the planets 21 and 40 both meshing a common ring gear fast with a hub 25 of the wheel 11 thus driven at a large reduction ratio suitable for cross-country vehicles, a removable inspection cover 27 permitting easy access to the gearing, the sun 20 of which may be removed therethrough to facilitate towing of the vehicle. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the gearing similarly comprises a first sun (117) mounted on a drive shaft (112) of a fluid motor (113) meshing planets (118) of a carrier (122) splined at (130) to a second sun (131) floatably mounted between and meshing planets (140) of a carrier (132) splined via a hollow shaft direct to the wheel hub (135, 136) to which the wheel (111) is secured, the planets (118 and 140) both meshing a common reaction ring gear fast with a fixed wheel support (125, 126), the wheel (111) again being driven at a large reduction ratio which in examples quoted varies between 20 and 40: 1. |
