PURPOSE:To provide a driving method never deteriorating the function of a magnetic fluid, even in case of driving to rotate a rotary shaft provided with a magnetic fluid shaft seal device after it is left for a long period. CONSTITUTION:This is a driving method to drive a rotary shaft 8 positioning its one side in a low pressure area Q, while the other side in a high pressure area P, making a magnetic fluid shaft seal device 9 as the border. The magnetic fluid shaft seal device 9 is provided with magnetic members 12 provided opposite to the rotary shaft 8, magnetic fluids 13 provided between the magnetic members 12 and the rotary shaft 8, and magnets 11 to form the lines of magnetic flux passing through the magnetic members 12, the magnetic fluids 13, and the rotary shaft 8. In this rotary shaft driving method, the rotary shaft 8 is rotated at a low speed for a short time, to expedite the mixing of a magnetic medium and a magnetic substance included therein, which compose the magnetic fluid 13, prior to setting the low pressure area Q at a desired low pressure ambient condition. |
