Cpds. of formula (I) (where R is H or Me and one n is 1 while the other is 2) are used in perfumery. (I, where R=H) has odour reminding of civetone, (I, where R =Me) has fine wood odour. They are prepd. from a cpd. of formula (II) by illuminating it in presence of O2 and O2-transferring sensitiser, reacting hydroperoxide mixt. obtd. with diborane and oxidising reaction prod. to diol mixt. which is reacted with monotosyl chloride and converted into monotosylate mixt. which is reacted with monotosyl chloride and converted into monotosylate mixt. which is treated with a strong alkali, esp. K tert.-butylate.
