1,146,398. Cross-linking aromatic polymers with polysulphonazides. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 3 March, 1967 [11 April, 1966], No. 10310/67. Headings C3P, C3R and C3T. An aromatic polymer, e.g. polystyrene, a bisphenol-A polycarbonate resin, polyphenylsilsesquioxane, polyarylene oxide or polymethylphenylsiloxane, is cross-linked by heating with an aromatic polysulphonazide having sulphonazide groups attached directly to the aromatic ring(s), e.g. 1,3-benzene-bis-aulphonazide. In Examples (1) a solution of polystyrene in methylene chloride was mixed with the sulphonazide, dried and heated to cross-link the resultant film; (2) a copolymer composed of diphenylsiloxy and dimethylsiloxy units was crosslinked with the sulphonazide; (3) poly-2,6-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene oxide and poly-2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide were cross-linked as (2); (4) a solution of polyphenylsilsesquioxane and the sulphonazide in benzene was cross-linked as in (1); and (5) a bisphenol-A polycarbonate resin was cross-linked as in (2). |
