1299120 Optical brighteners SANDOZ Ltd 10 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 58647/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division D1] Novel compounds of the general Formula I wherein each of X and Y represents an optionally substituted phenylamino radical or a radical of Formula II or of the Formula III and wherein each of T and Z represents a radical of Formula II or III, R represents H or C 1-5 alkyl optionally substituted by one or more hydroxy, alkoxy, cyano, aminocarbonyl, phenyl, phenoxy or cresoxy radicals, R 1 represents H or C 1-5 alkyl, R 2 represents OH, CN, or CO 2 R 7 radical, each of R 3 and R 4 represents C 1-5 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl or R 3 and R 4 together with the N atom form a saturated heterocyclic radical, R 7 is C 1-5 alkyl optionally substituted by OH, alkoxy, phenoxy, cresoxy or phenyl, M represents an alkali metal, an ammonium radical or an equivalent of an alkaline earth metal, anion(-) represents a colourless anion, m is 1-3, n is 1 or 2, p is 2-6, provided that the molecule is devoid of a chromophoric radical and contains as the only anionic watersolubilizing groups the two sulphonic acid groups attached to the stilbene residue, and protonization and quaternization products of these compounds, are prepared by reacting 2 mols. of a cyanuric halide with (a) 1 mol. of 4,41-diaminostilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acid or a salt thereof, (b) 0-2 mols. of an optionally substituted aminobenzene and (c) 2-4 mols. of an amine of Formula IV (or mixture thereof) with the proviso that (b)+(c) amount in all to 4 mols., the product being protonized, quaternized or salified if necessary.
