A catalyst useful for the alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons is produced by reacting a compound of the formula AlXyR(3 - y), where X is halogen, R is a hydrocarbon radical and y is 1, 3/2, 2 or 3, except 3 when X is fluorine, with a carrier comprising aluminum oxide and boron oxide.
