The fold-away sprung mattress bed is mounted on a pivoting door which has support-battens (2) for the mattress base (5). The mattress base incorporates a frame which fits between the battens, and to which is fixed a sprung framework (6). The mattress base frame has recesses all round forming inverted steps when the mattress base is horizontal; with the horizontal arms (9) of the inverted steps resting on the door battens. The mattress (14) is fixed to the base by a ticking (16) fixed to the underneath side of the mattress along an edge which is spaced from the periphery of the mattress enough to enable the bed to be tucked in with bedding.
