<p>A defect in a large metal casting is repaired by placing a refractory perimeter around the defect to form a joint with the casting, placing loose particulate insulating material on the casting around the joint, placing an exothermic reaction mixture inside the refractory perimeter, igniting to form a superheated melt which separates into a metal phase in contact with the casting and a slag phase on top, and solidifying the melt to form a weld in the defect, the perimeter and slag then being removed. Method is used in repairing large castings, such as ingot moulds and mould stools.</p> |
