PURPOSE:To produce an epoxy compound in high selectivity and high conversion by oxidizing an olefin with molecular oxygen in the presence of a heteropolyacid onium salt in which the polyatom is W and/or its derivative as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:One or more kinds of compounds selected from compounds of formula I [X is an element belonging to 3B to 5B group in the periodic table; Q is formula II (R1 to R4 are each a 1 to 30C alkyl and one of them may be H; L is N or P)], compounds of formula III [M is an element belonging to 3A to 7A group, 8 group or 1B to 5B group in the periodic table or its oxo compound; m is 12- (valence number of X + valence number of M)], compounds of formula IV [1 is 16-2X(valence number of X)], compounds of formula V [o is 20-2X(valence number of X) - (valence number of M)] and compounds of formula VI (p is 9 or 10; M is a lanthanoid-based element) are used as a catalyst. An olefin compound is oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of the above-mentioned catalyst under 0.1 to 30kg/cm<2>, preferably 0.5 to 10kg/cm<2> oxygen partial pressure, thus affording the objective epoxy compound. |
