PURPOSE:To perform printing while printing paper is certainly fed by opening the paper feed-out end of a paper guide member, by a method wherein the pressure contact roller of a paper bail is moved from an open position to a close position before the printing paper is supplied to a platen from above. CONSTITUTION:When a platen motor is driven, in the case of slip paper, the upper end part thereof passes between a platen 3 and a printing head 21 while being guided by a first paper guide plate 5 to feed the slip paper to a required position and, in the case of continuous paper, the upper end part thereof passes between the platen 3 and the printing head 21 while being guided by guide plates 9a, 9b and an open member 11 to feed the continuous paper to the required position. After the platen motor is stopped to interrupt paper feed, when the drive motor of a carriage 19 reverses to move the carriage 19 to a home position, an operation lever 35 is released from the contact with a contact plate 19a. Paper bail arms 22, 23 are revolved around a guide shaft 17 in a clockwise direction by a tensile spring 24 to allow a pressure contact roller 27 to move from an open position to a close position and the upper end part of the paper is pressed to the platen 3 by the pressure contact roller 27 and, thereafter, the paper is fed by the driving of the platen motor.
