PURPOSE:To obtain a polymerization regulator, consisting of a specific hydroperoxide, used together with a radical polymerization initiator for (co) polymerizing unsaturated monomers and capable providing a polymer having remarkably reduce polymerization degree without reducing polymerization rate. CONSTITUTION:A polymerization regulator obtained by using a hydroperoxide expressed by the formula (R1 is H or 1-5C alkyl; R2 and R3 are 1-3C alkyl), e.g. cumene hydroperoxide, etc., in an equimolar amount or more, preferably a molar amount of 1.2-50 times with a polymerization initiator, e.g. azbisisobutyronitrile, etc., together therewith a radical polymerization initiator for (co)polymerizing unsaturated monomers, e.g. styrene, etc., at <=100 deg.C tempera ture. Even if the viscosity of the polymerization system is increased, gel effects can be prevent and the moleuclar weight distribution of the final polymer becomes uniform. Thereby dispersion index can be reduced. The above mentioned regulator is odorless and readily handlable.
