PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration of an element by impression of an abnormally high voltage thereto by providing a means for detecting the voltage response state of display electrodes and means for forming a voltage of a specified width to a counter electrode driving part thereby stabilizing the voltage value impressed to a display part against a temp. change. CONSTITUTION:The display electrodes 3 to be colored are selected and the prescribed voltage is impressed thereto from the display electrode driving part 5 when a coloring cycle is started by a signal S0 sent from a control part 10. On the other hand, a coloration voltage V1 from the driving part 6 is impressed to a counter electrode 4. The voltage fluctuation of the display electrodes 3 is detected by the detecting means using the display electrode 3a for detection in the driving part 6. The voltage for coloration outputted from the voltage forming means is corrected in accordance with the detected value. The prescribed voltage is impressed to the display electrodes 3 from the driving part 5 and the corrected voltage Vb for decoloration is impressed from the driving part 6 to the counter electrode 4 by which the display electrodes are decolored when an erasing cycle is started.
