PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing an aromatic polyfunctional carboxylic acid by oxidizing a tri- or polycyclic carbocyclic aromatic compound. CONSTITUTION:The aforementioned method for production is characterized as follows. A tri- or polycyclic carbocyclic aromatic compound such as anthracene or phenanthrene is oxidized in the presence of an aqueous solution of a hypochlorite and a base using ruthenium tetroxide as a catalyst to afford a polyfunctional carboxylic acid. For example, the anthracene is reacted in the presence of RuCl3, an aqueous solution of NaClO and NaOH together with acetonitrile to provide pyromellitic acid in 43% yield. Thereby, the objective polyfunctional carboxylic acid can be produced under mild conditions of temperature nearly close to ordinary temperature under ordinary pressure in excellent selectivity and high yield without requiring a special apparatus. |
