<p>A process and apparatus for the molecular oxygen oxidation of a secondary alcohol such as isopropanol to hydrogen peroxide is provided. In one embodiment, exothermic heat of reaction is removed by vaporising part of the reaction mixture, condensing and returning the resulting vapors and adding a ballast gas prior to condensation. In another embodiment, the net oxygen requirement is provided by injecting molecular oxygen into reaction liquid which has been removed from the oxidation zone, and circulating the combined mixture back to the oxidation zone. In yet another embodiment, the oxidation is carried out in two zones with the total oxygen being fed to, and the hydrogen peroxide product being recovered from, the second reaction zone. Apparatus for the reaction comprises a preferably spherical reactor (1) having a first annular reaction zone (4) surrounding and separated by a cylindrical baffle (2) from a second central cylindrical reaction zone (3). The baffle has holes to permit liquid flow from the first zone to the second zone. <MATH></p> |
