Coarse solid particles are produced from a sprayed melt, suspension or solution by accretion on fine particles in a fluidized bed, followed by separation of the fine particles for recycling. Solid particles, of particle size range d = 0.4-3 mm, are produced by spraying a melt, suspension or solution to form droplets of the same size range which are fed, while avoiding agglomeration, into a fluidized bed of fine particles (maximum particle size xmax = d/5) for cooling or drying and for solidification on the fine particles, followed by separation of the coarse and fine particles, the fluidized bed having an empty space value iota of greater than 0.6 and the fine particles being returned to the fluidized bed. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the above process, comprising a separate unit for producing the fine particles by spraying.
