The plasma generator includes a combination of an electric arc plasma generator (1,2) and a high frequency (HF) plasma generator (4,5). The generator has a cathode (1) surrounded by a working gas flow. A ring shaped anode (2) is arranged co-axially to the cathode, to produce an arc discharge, for the ionization of the working gas. The anode is designed as an outlet nozzle for the plasma jet. A system for the production of a HF magnetic field (5) is provided in the region of the plasma jet leaving the anode. A coil (5) is provided as the system for producing a HF magnetic field.
